Lloyd’s practice focuses on the protection of intellectual property rights, including patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and copyrights. He has spent his career counseling a wide variety of clients on all aspects of intellectual property matters in support of their business objectives.
Clients rely on Lloyd for assistance developing and implementing strategies to pursue and defend high-quality intellectual property portfolios, as well as to navigate competitive intellectual property landscapes. With an approach tailored to each client’s objectives, he prepares and negotiates technology transfer and joint development agreements, and prepares and prosecutes domestic and foreign patent, trademark, and copyright applications. When appropriate, he advises clients regarding their freedom-to-operate and assists clients to design around competitive patents. When necessary, he litigates issues of patent validity before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and before foreign tribunals with assistance from a global network of foreign representatives.
Lloyd’s technical experience spans many fields, including fluid mechanics, material science, heat transfer, electronics cooling (from die to datacenter), complex machines, biomechanics, automotive and aerospace propulsion systems, avionics, consumer electronics, and semiconductor manufacturing and packaging, as well as advanced computational methods and machine learning as applied to signal, audio and video processing and speech recognition.
Before becoming a lawyer, Lloyd spent nearly 10 years with the Intel Corporation researching, developing and deploying thermal and acoustic technologies. While with Intel, he published two peer-reviewed papers and received dozens of issued U.S. and foreign patents. He also served as adjunct faculty at Portland State University and graduate thesis advisor at Georgia Tech.
He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering, with honors, from the University of Arizona. While pursuing those degrees he served as a graduate research assistant and graduate teaching assistant in the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering department. Lloyd received his law degree from Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon, where he sat on the editorial board of the Environmental Law Review and was a member of the Ninth Circuit Review. Lloyd also served as a deputy law clerk for the Honorable John P. Cooney and the Honorable Owen M. Panner at the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon.
Lloyd is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon, and the Oregon Supreme Court.
