Justin J. Cassell

Justin represents clients in intellectual property matters, focusing on patent prosecution, portfolio strategy, and opinion work. By aligning patent strategies with clients’ commercial objectives, Justin navigates the complexities of the patent process, from analyzing invention disclosures to preparing and filing applications. His comprehensive approach includes drafting opinion letters and coordinating global patent prosecution initiatives, ensuring that clients’ innovations are well protected and enforceable both domestically and internationally.

Justin's commitment to client satisfaction is evident in his ability to incorporate essential client insights into every patent he drafts. This approach fosters positive interactions when working with examiners and effectively tackles challenges in the prosecution process. By prioritizing client needs, he produces patents that meet the expectations of both examiners and clients.

Justin manages U.S. patent portfolios for a diverse range of domestic and foreign clients. He works to streamline the process of filing international applications in the U.S., often seeking to explain and reconcile differences for successful outcomes. Justin’s extensive engineering background, legal experience, and relevant work history equip him to understand various technologies, including medical, mechanical, electrical, software, and materials.

Justin has authored opinions to defend clients against allegations of willful patent infringement and has negotiated settlements and licenses with opposing counsel concerning these patents. He often advises clients on infringement risks during the design process. This advice includes conducting validity and clearance studies to assess competitor patents. Additionally, his work encompasses reexaminations and other post-grant reviews aimed at resolving issues and disputes.
