Spencer Fennemore participated in the 2023 National Patent Application Drafting Competition and represented the S.J. Quinney College of Law with his teammates Victoria Carrington and Jordan Cobabe. The team reached the semifinal level, finishing third overall out of a pool of ten regional teams from Silicon Valley.

The competition, sponsored by the USPTO, provides participants with the opportunity to develop patent skills by applying legal principles to a hypothetical invention scenario. This year, the hypothetical invention was a bike rack system. Teams were required to analyze an invention statement, perform a patentability search, draft a set of patent claims and a patent specification, and then present and defend the application to a set of judges made up of patent experts. The team was also lucky to be mentored by Jens Jenkins in preparation for the competition. His sage wisdom and guidance helped the team perform well in regional rounds.
