W|N Again Wins Prestigious National Rankings by Intellectual Property Today

April 25, 2011

Workman Nydegger received a Top 10 ranking on “The Patent Scorecard 2011 – Law Firms,” an annual survey by Intellectual Property Today, a national trade journal focused on legal issues in patent, trademark and copyright law.  The survey ranks firms across the country against a variety of indicators measuring patent strength and quality.  W|N was also ranked No. 21 (of 327 total firms) in the nationwide survey, based on the number of patents issued for clients.  Notably, W|N was one of only five firms in the entire country that was ranked in both the top 10 for patent quality, as well as the top 25 for the number of patents obtained for clients.

Workman Nydegger’s No. 10 ranking was published along with the complete results of the survey in the April, 2011 issue of Intellectual Property Today. “The Law Firm Patent Scorecard is a high-level evaluative tool for firms to gauge patent prosecution from a quality, technological strength and breadth of impact,” IPT’s editors write. “[The scorecard] is a rating of patent activity through the lens of patent representation.”

Workman Nydegger filed some 824 patents for the year ending Dec. 31, 2010 and earned high rankings under the scorecard’s Technology Strength, Current Impact, Science Linkage, Innovation Cycle Time metrics. “We’re very proud of this achievement, particularly since this particular ranking is unique in the sense that it gauges patent quality,” said Brent P. Lorimer, managing director of Workman Nydegger.

Workman Nydegger was also ranked No. 21 in IPT’s nationwide survey, based on the number of patents obtained for the firm’s clients. The firm’s 1,166 total patents in 2010 was an increase of more than 23 percent over 2009. Workman Nydegger is the only Salt Lake City IP firm to be ranked in the top 25 by IPT, which published the results in its March, 2011 edition.  The accomplishment is further underscored if one considers that based on the number of patent attorneys in each of the ranked firms, Workman Nydegger is among the top five firms in terms of the per capita number of patents obtained for its clients.

Mr. Lorimer noted that “This accomplishment, coupled with our top 10 ranking for patent quality, illustrates the commitment to success that our attorneys consistently deliver.”

Founded more than 25 years ago, Workman Nydegger is one of largest firms in Salt Lake, and has consistently earned recognition as one of the top intellectual property firms in the nation.  The firm represents a wide array of clients in all areas of intellectual property law, including patent, trademark, copyright, unfair competition, and related litigation and licensing matters, and in a diverse range of technologies, including computer systems, software, e-commerce and information technology; electronics and electrical engineering; pharmaceutical, neutraceutical, chemical, biotechnology, and medical and life science technologies; physics and optics; mechanics and mechanical engineering and alternative energy.
