Workman Nydegger was founded in 1984 by H. Ross Workman, Rick D. Nydegger and Allen R. Jensen, and a handful of associate lawyers. From that modest beginning, the firm now numbers among the largest firms in Salt Lake City, and is known both nationally and internationally as a top intellectual property firm specializing in prosecution and litigation. Earlier this year Workman Nydegger received a Top 10 ranking on "The Patent Scorecard 2011 - Law Firms," an annual survey by Intellectual Property Today, a national trade journal focused on legal issues in patent, trademark and copyright law. The survey ranks firms across the country against a variety of indicators measuring patent strength and quality. W|N was also ranked No. 21 (of 327 total firms) in a nationwide survey based on the number of patents issued for clients. Notably, W|N was one of only five firms in the entire country that was ranked in both the top 10 for patent quality, as well as the top 25 for the number of patents obtained for clients. Workman Nydegger is the only Salt Lake City IP firm to be ranked in the top 25 by IPT, which published the results in its March, 2011 edition. The accomplishment is further underscored if one considers that based on the number of patent attorneys in each of the ranked firms, Workman Nydegger is among the top five firms in terms of the per capita number of patents obtained for its clients.
As intellectual property continues to move more to the forefront on an international as well as domestic level, W|N is fortunate to enjoy an extensive network of IP law firms located in virtually every country around the world. This international nature of our practice has led us to assemble a unique team of legal professionals, many of whom have lived overseas and speak a second language. Included among the second languages spoken by W|N’s attorneys are French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, Russian and Japanese. Other W|N employees are fluent in Cambodian and Korean.

W|N is committed to helping educate and train the next generation of IP lawyers. Many of the firm’s attorneys have donated time to teaching IP law courses at the law schools of both the University of Utah and Brigham Young University.
On a national level, our attorneys have also been active in donating time to serve in professional associations such as The American Intellectual Property Lawyers Association, the Intellectual Property Law Section of the American Bar Association, the National Council of Intellectual Property Law Associations, the National Inventors Hall of Fame, the Supreme Court Historical Society and the Utah State Bar. Several of our attorneys have chaired committees for these IP associations, and have served on their governing boards. Members of the firm have also been involved in helping to shape IP policy in other ways, including service on the Patent Public Advisory Committee of the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
As part of our mission W|N also prides itself in serving our local community. W|N has donated time and funds to such worthy causes as Habitat for Humanity, Shriners Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation's "A Wishing Place," the United Way Katrina Relief Fund and The Childrens’ Center.
