Mr. Rice retired from a career as an in-house attorney at DuPont and joined the firm in 2003. He currently assists in the adjunct teaching responsibilities of the firm at the BYU and University of Utah law schools, teaching courses in biotechnology law, patent law, and antitrust/intellectual property. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Intellectual Property Owners Association and as a member of the Association of Corporate Patent Counsel from 1998-2003.

Mr. Rice had an extensive career as an in-house attorney at DuPont. For several years he served as a Supervising Senior Attorney, overseeing an extensive international patent/know-how licensing program.

Later as Group Counsel, Mr. Rice supervised the commercial attorneys of the DuPont textile fibers businesses. In that capacity he handled antitrust matters, including a group responsible for mergers and acquisitions.

Mr. Rice also served as Chief Counsel-Environment, supervising a group that handled environmental and safety issues. He has had extensive experience in legislative/lobbying activity and led legal efforts to achieve regulatory reform related to certain aspects of DuPont’s business. He was later given the added responsibility of DuPont’s Chemical Solutions and Materials and Logistics businesses.

Mr. Rice then rose to serve as DuPont’s Chief Counsel-Intellectual Property, overseeing patent and trademark work of some fifty in-house IP lawyers. He culminated his career at DuPont as Vice President and Assistant General Counsel, supervising all DuPont intellectual property work, including that of all domestic and international subsidiaries. In addition, to serving as Chief Counsel-IP, he was also Chief Counsel of the Asia/Pacific region and of DuPont’s Agricultural and Nutrition business where he oversaw legal aspects of DuPont’s biotechnology businesses.

Mr. Rice is an adjunct professor of law at Brigham Young University where he has taught courses on patent law, intellectual property/antitrust law and biotechnology law and ethics for the last six years.

He is active in entrepreneurship activities and is associated with entrepreneur contests at Brigham Young University, the University of Utah, Utah State University and Grow Utah Ventures.

Within the firm as Of Counsel, Mr. Rice advises on issues such as patent law, antitrust and client matters.
